Facts on Østerdalen

Østerdalen one of the major valleys in eastern Norway. It lies between Gudbrandsdalen to the west and the Swedish border to the east.

The Østerdalen valley has plenty of room for everyone. Its deep forests extend in all directions. At Rendalen Øiseth Hotel, Jutulhogget, the second biggest canyon in Northern Europe, cuts through the surrounding mountains, while the mighty Sølen massif dominates the landscape to the east. The forty kilometre-long Storsjøen lake is situated at the southern end of Rendalen valley, while the Glomma river runs through the western part of the Rendalen Municipality.

Forty-three per cent of the land in Folldal is protected either as a national park, a landscape protection area or a nature reserve. The valley extends westward from Alvdal in the Nord-Østerdalen valley to Dovrefjell National Park. Folldal is an excellent starting point for walking in Rondane, Dovrefjell, Alvdal Vestfjell and Knutshø/Einunndalen.

The National Tourist Route Rondane ends in Folldal. Stor-Elvdal offers the same opportunities for nature experiences. Mountains, forest, lakes and rivers offer endless opportunities for outdoor pursuits, whether you are interested in hunting, fishing, canoeing, walking in the mountains, skiing, cycling etc. The Friisvegen-Vinjevegen roads start in Koppang and is the highest-lying mountain pass between the Gudbrandsdalen and Østerdalen valleys. It offers many opportunities for interesting walks and drives.
