Horten is located in the county of Vestfold – "the sunny part" of Eastern Norway.

The town is a regional centre for education, research and expertise. Horten is a seaside town, with many flourishing gardens and shopping areas, and not least a place for great summer leisure activities.

Geography

The coastline stretches for 40 kilometres from the Re community in the north to Tønsberg in the south. The town of Horten is located out on a peninsula along the Oslofjord.

Horten municipality has five built-up areas: Horten, Åsgårdstrand, Borre, Skoppum and Nykirke.

Population: 25,678.

History

The municipality has settlements dating back to the Stone Age. The Borre mounds, part of the Borre National Park (the first national park to be founded in Norway), bear witness to the fact that the area was a centre of power in the Viking Age.
