Getting to the Fjell & Fjord region and around

Oslo - Sandvika - Gol - Geilo - Brimnes - Bruravik - Granvin - Indre Arna - Bergen

Take the main road from Oslo and drive westwards, following the signs to Bergen. After around two hours and 135 kilometres, you reach Hallingdal. Continue across Hardangervidda to Hardangerfjord. Take the ferry between Brimnes - Bruravik. There is a junction to fv. 52 at Gol and fv. 50 at Hagafoss in Hol.

Alternative route: From Oslo and Larvik, take rv. 280 or 287 via Drammen through Norefjell/Kunstnerdalen ("The Artists' Valley").

Oslo - Sandvika - Gol - Hol - Aurland - Voss - Bergen

Drive through the mountains and tunnels along the Sognefjord to Aurland. From here you take the E16 towards Bergen or Lærdal.

Alternative route: From Oslo and Larvik, take rv. 280 or 287 via Drammen through Norefjell/Kunstnerdalen ("The Artists' Valley").

Oslo - Sandvika - Gol - Borlaug - Lærdal - Aurland - Voss - Bergen

Drive from Hemsedal through the high mountains to Borlaug. From here, follow the E16 along the Lærdal River to the Sognefjord and further on to Bergen.

Alternative route: From Oslo and Larvik, take rv. 280 or 287 via Drammen through Norefjell/Kunstnerdalen ("The Artists' Valley").

Other main roads

The Fjell & Fjord region is linked to the regions in the north, east and south via E16, E134, fv. 13, fv. 40, fv. 51, fv. 53 and fv. 55. Fv. 13 has junctions to fv. 7 at Granvin and to E16 at Voss. 

The rv. 7/fv.7 is part of the scenic Hardanger National Tourist Route.

Tips: Fv. 50 and fv. 52 have no ferry crossings. There are tunnels in the west and cyclists should be aware that bicycles are not allowed in some of them.

Alternative routes: Seltun - Lo (E16), Aurlandsvegen (fv. 243), Stalheimskleivi (E16) and Bruravik - Ulvik - Hvolven (fv. 572). These are pleasant alternatives for those travelling by car. 

Be prepared for snow at mountain passes from as early as October.

Public transport

Park the car for a couple of days and make use of the public transport available. Two train routes, several buses, passenger boats and car ferries facilitate your travels in the region.
