Valdres offers a wide variety of culinary experiences. Enjoy a fancy five-course gourmet dinner, or visit a summer farm and try the traditional “rømmegrøt” (sour cream porridge) with cured meat and home-made flat bread.
There are many restaurants to choose from with both Norwegian and international cuisine.
Gastronomy is extremely important in Valdres. It is part of the area's cultural heritage and long family traditions. The regional identity of locally produced food, such as cheese, ice cream, cured meats, sour cream porridge and the semi-fermented trout (rakfisk), is growing, and you will find many restaurants, cafés and shops in Valdres selling these local products. Traditional methods combined with a modern touch will give you a unique taste of Valdres. In Valdres, you will also find a local brewery called Valdres Gardsbryggeri. They brew four different types of beer that are known for their great tastes and unique bottles.
Some farms produce and sell their own products and you can visit them at their location.
Moahaugen Gård is a typical Valdres farm with production and processing meat from lamb and sheep. The main products are cured sausages and salted and smoked ribs of mutton. The farm has its own store.
If you wish to try a traditional meal from Valdres, you should visit the farm Sørre Hemsing Gard in Vang. They serve cured sausage, "rømmegrøt" (sour cream porridge), pancakes and waffles to their guests. The farm also has animals such as horses, goats, hens and sheep. Strandmo Stølsysteri and Olestølen are also open for visitors. They make and sell their own cheese on their mountain farms.
Many of the mountain lodge restaurants have excellent chefs who use nature’s own kitchen. Herbs, vegetables, mountain trout, meat from reindeer, elk and grouse. Fresh mountain water and locally brewed beer. Try dining at one of the following mountain lodges:
