Winter in Valdres

With 1,500 kilometres of cross-country trails and seven alpine centres, Valdres is one of Norway’s most attractive winter destinations.

The winter season normally starts in the middle of November and lasts until the end of April. However, for the most enthusiastic skiers, it is possible to go cross-country skiing in Jotunheimen National Park all through May.

Cross-country skiing

More than 1,500 kilometres of machine-prepared trails leading across the mountains and through the majestic forests are just waiting to be enjoyed, whilst off-piste skiing offers endless opportunities for exploring the wonders of Norway’s undisturbed winter landscape. See more information about cross-country skiing in Valdres. Contact the tourist information for cross-country trail maps.

Alpine skiing

For those who are more interested in speed and excitement, there are a total of seven alpine centres in Valdres. The slopes are suitable for both beginners and the more advanced skiers and snowboarders. Many of the centres have terrain parks and separate areas for children. All of them have a restaurant/cafeteria, ski lessons and ski rental.

Off-piste skiing

If you are seeking the thrill of off-piste skiing, or wish to explore the mountains, you should visit the northernmost regions of Valdres, on your own or with a local guide.

Snow-kiting

Kiting has become a very popular sport and it is not uncommon to see a group of kite-skiers in the open mountain areas on a windy day. Beginners can sign up for kite-skiing lessons and look forward to a unique adventure. Contact Tyin Aktiv for furthern information and booking.

Winter without skis

You do not have to be a skier to enjoy Valdres. A number of other activities are available.

Sleigh rides
A cosy sleigh ride with torches and bells that will lead you into the winter landscape whilst you close you eyes and listen to the steady rythm of the horses.

Dog sledding
Dog sledding is both exotic and environmentally friendly. You can choose to drive yourself after thorough instructions, or sit comfortably in the sledge.

SMX
A fun and action-packed activity for those who need variety from the traditional alpine skiing. You can rent an SMX, a kind of bike with skis, at both Beitostølen and Tyin-Filefjell. They offer lessons for beginners.

Snow rafting
Jump into a raft and cruise down the snow-covered hills at a speed up to 90 kilometres per hour. A perfectly safe thrill ride for the whole family.

Ice fishing
Traditional ice fishing is popular in Valdres and there are many great locations to choose from. For information about the most popular lakes and waters for ice fishing, as well as information about fishing licence fees, please contact Valdres Tourist Information Office.
