Hiking in Geirangerfjord, Ålesund and Sunnmøre

The stunning fjord landscape of Western Norway is an eldorado for hikers, and superb walks await within easy distance of both Ålesund and Geiranger.

Ålesund

The Art Nouveau Town of Ålesund is a perfect starting point for hikes in the coastal and fjord landscape of the region of Sunnmøre. Here you will find both hard challenges, like the unique summit of Slogen in the Sunnmøre Alps, or easier options in the town itself, along the coast and in the fjord area. Cultural history and stunning outdoor experiences are to be found around every bend wherever you go.

The Geirangerfjord

When you take a well-deserved rest on the mountains above the Geirangerfjord, you will understand why it has been chosen as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are well marked paths throughout the area. Good maps are available and there are plenty of routes to choose from, from gentle strolls to tough summit hikes. You can also hike for several days in the Tafjordfjella Mountains, going from cabin to cabin.

The glaciers of Nordfjord

A little south of Ålesund and the Geirangerfjord you will find the glacier landscape of Nordfjord, including the spectacular Briksdalsbreen Glacier. This area also offers great hikes, like the hike to the top of Skåla Mountain, and lots of trails along the coast.

Top hikes

Hikes here never start very far from your accommodation, or a car park. Many are also easy accessible by public transportation. You can explore on your own or join a guided tour. Walks can take a few hours or several days – the choice is yours. Here are three of the most unique hikes in the area:

Slogen in the Sunnmøre Alps
Slogen (1,564 metres above sea level) is arguably the finest summit in the Sunnmøre Alps, with impressive views of the surrounding peaks and the Hjørundfjord.

Skageflå in the Geirangerfjord
Perched high above the Geirangerfjord, the mountain farm of Skageflå is a popular hiking destination, offering spectacular views of the fjord and the famous Seven Sisters Waterfall on the opposite mountain side.

Skåla in Nordfjord
Skåla (1,848 metres above sea level) is the highest mountain in Northern Europe with a foot in a fjord. It is possible to spend the night in the tower at the top of Skåla, which affords magnificent views of the area.

Guided hikes
