The forces of nature are powerful where the fjords meet the open sea, offering magnificent sights, sounds and experiences. Wind and waves have shaped this landscape through thousands of years, creating distinctive coastal landmarks, some of which have been important navigation points for sailors for centuries.
Visit Utvær in Solund, Norway’s westernmost island. Take time to also visit Bulandet in Askvoll, Norway’s westernmost active fishing community. Bulandet is a conglomerate of islands and skerries at the edge of the open sea. Further north lies Florø, Norway’s westernmost town, founded in 1860.
FjordKysten has a rich and dramatic history. Here you will find well preserved historical monuments, and many exciting sites from the Viking age, including the Gulating, "the cradle of democracy". The saga island of Kinn lies at the mouth of the fjord – covered in grass and incredibly green – and provides a home for the fabled Kinn Church from the 12th century. The legendary church was built in a Romanesque style, and is one of the oldest in Norway. The local tourist office offers guided tours on the island, directly from the pier to the church. The Vikings where very active in this region and traces from Viking times have been found all along FjordKysten. On the Dalsfjord you can sail along the fjord in a Viking ship. Visit the millstonepark in Hyllestad - the park, which presents unique geological features, has been nominated for consideration for inclusion on the UNESCO world heritage list.
Many artists find inspiration from the wonderful scenery and lights of FjordKysten. The Norwegian poet Jakob Sande came from Dale in Sunnfjord, where there is now a Nordic artists' centre. Today, art flourishes through a wide diversity of artists, galleries and studios. Go on a painting course, or visit a gallery and take home a very special souvenir from your holiday trip.
