By bus
There are daily express bus departures to the area from Oslo, Trondheim and Bergen, all operated by Nor-Way Bussekspress.
From Oslo via Gudbrandsdalen and Strynefjell
Møreekspressen (day) og Nordfjordekspressen (evening/night) runs via Gudbrandsdalen and over Strynefjell to Stryn with year-round connections to Hellesylt and Stranda, approximate travel time 9 - 10 hours. During the summer season (15 June - 31 August) there is also a bus connection to Geiranger (approximate travel time 8 hours and 30 minutes) via Geirangervegen for the 9:30 departure from Oslo.
From Oslo via Gudbrandsdalen and Romsdalen
Dag- og Nattekspressen runs via Gudbrandsdalen and Romsdalen to Åndalsnes (approximate travel time 8 hours) and Ålesund (approximate travel time 10 hours). From Åndalsnes there are bus connections over the Trollstigen Mountain Road to Valldal and Geiranger during the summer season (15 June - 31 August), or via Ålesund or Sjøholt year-round.
From Trondheim via Surnadal and Molde
Mørelinjen runs fromTrondheim via Surnadal, Molde and Ålesund with connection Sjøholt to Valldal (approximate travel time 7 hours and 30 minutes), Stranda and Geiranger.
From Trondheim via Dovrefjell and Strynefjell
The express bus between Trondheim and Bergen runs daily from Trondheim over Dovrefjell and Strynefjell to Stryn with connections to Hellesylt and Stranda throughout the year. During the summer the service connects with the ferry from Hellesylt to Geiranger.
From Bergen via Førde and Stryn
Vestlandsbussen has several daily departures and runs via Oppedal, Førde, Olden and Stryn to Ålesund with connections from Stryn to Hellesylt and Stranda (approximate travel time 8 hours). Connections with the ferfy from Hellesylt to Geiranger during the summer.
By train
The closest railway station is Åndalsnes, and the trains are operated by the Norwegian State Railways (NSB).
From Oslo and Trondheim
There are daily train departures with the Norwegian State Railways (NSB) from Oslo (approximate travel time 5 hours and 30 minutes) and Trondheim (approximate travel time 4 - 5 hours) to Åndalsnes, changing at Dombås for most trains. From Åndalsnes there are connections by bus to Ålesund and Sjøholt all year round, and over the Trollstigen Mountain Road to Valldal and Geiranger in the summer (15 June - 31 August).
By aeroplane
The closest airport is Ålesund Airport Vigra, which is served by SAS with daily scheduled services to and from the largest towns and cities in Norway. For every arrival/departure there is a bus service to/from Ålesund and Moa.
To Ålesund Airport Vigra there are direct flights from London Gatwick (with SAS), Copenhagen (with SAS) and from Riga (with Air Baltic). These are the only direct flights to the district from abroad. To fly in from other countries you must fly via one the larger towns or cities in Norway, and take a domestic flight to reach Ålesund Airport Vigra.
By boat
During the summer (15 April - 14 September) you can take the northbound Hurtigruten (the Norwegian Coastal Voyage) from Bergen to Geiranger. In the winter, Hurtigruten does not does not enter the Geirangerfjord but goes to Ålesund. You then have to catch a bus from Ålesund to Geiranger (approximately 110 kilometres).
By car/motorcycle
From the south (Oslo) via Valderesflya (during the summer) and Strynefjell
Distance: 435 kilometres (around 7 hours and 30 minutes)
Take the E16 towards Hønefoss and Fagernes. Then road fv. 51 over Valdresflya to Randen. Fv. 15 takes you on to Lom and Grotli. Continue for about 13 kilometres on the same road, og turn of to road fv. 63 (Geirangervegen) to Geiranger.
From the south (Oslo) via Gudbrandsdalen and Strynefjell
Distance: During the summer via Geirangervegen - 445 kilometres (around 7 hours and 30 minutes). During the winter to Hellesylt - 520 kilometres (around 8 hours and 30 minutes).
Take the E6 via Hamar to Lillehammer, or E4 via Gjøvik to Lillehammer. Continue on the E6 to Otta. Turn off at Otta, take road fv. 15 to Grotli. During the summer: Turn off to road fv. 63, 13 kilometres after Grotli, and take the road to Geiranger (Geirangervegen). During the winter: Take road fv. 15 from Grotli to Stryn. From there take road fv. 60 to Hellesylt.
From the south (Oslo) via Gudbrandsdalen and Romsdalen
Distance: During the summer (via the Trollstigen Mountain Road to Valldal) - 483 kilometres (around 8 hours). During the winter (via Sjøholt to Valldal) - 550 kilometres (around 9 hours).
Take the E6 via Hamar to Lillehammer, or E4 via Gjøvik to Lillehammer. Continue on the E6 to Dombås. Take the E136 over Lesja and down Romsdalen. During the summer: Turn off to road fv. 63 at Sogge Bridge, approximately 5 kilometres before Åndalsnes. Fv. 63 leads you to the Trollstigen Mountain Road and Valldal.
During the winter: Continue on the E136 to Sjøholt. Turn off to road fv. 650 via Stordal, Liabygda (ferry to Stranda, 10 minutes), or continue on to Linge (ferry to Eidsdal, 10 minutes). Road fv. 63 takes you on to Valldal or Geiranger.
From the west (Bergen) via Førde and Stryn
Distance: 315 kilometres (around 5 hours and 30 minutes)
Take the E39 northwards to the Sognefjord (ferry Oppedal – Lavik, 20 minutes), continue on the E39 to Førde and Byrkjelo. Turn off to road fv. 60 to Stryn and Hellesylt.
Alternative route during the summer: From Stryn you can also take road fv. 15 towards Grotli and turn off to fv. 63 about 13 kilometres before Grotli. Take fv. 63 to Geiranger. Distance: Approximately 326 kilometres.
From the west (Bergen) via Voss, Lærdal and Stryn
Distance: 390 kilometres (around 7 hours)
Take the E16 via Voss and Lærdal (ferry Fodnes - Manhellar, 15 minutes), then continue on fv. 5 to Skei in Jølster. From there take the E39 to Byrkjelo, turn off onto road fv. 60 to Stryn and then further on to Hellesylt.
Alternative summer route: Follow road fv. 15 towards Grotli, and turn off to fv. 63 to Geiranger, approximately 13 kilometres before Grotli. Distance: 420 kilometres (around 7 hours and 30 minutes).
From the north (Trondheim) via Nordmøre and Molde
Distance: 270 kilometres (around 5 hours and 30 minutes)
Take the E6 out of Trondheim, then follow the E39 towards Orkanger and Halsa (ferry Halsa - Kanestraum, 20 minutes). Continue on the E39 to Molde (ferry Molde – Vestsnes, 35 minutes). Continue on the E39 to Sjøholt. Turn off onto road fv. 650 via Stordal, Liabygda (from Liabygda you can choose to take the ferry to Stranda, 10 minutes) and Linge to Valldal. From Linge there is a ferry to Eidsdal (10 minutes). From there take fv. 63 to Geiranger.
From the north (Trondheim) via Dovrefjell and Romsdalen
Distance: 348 kilometres (around 6 hours)
Take the E6 from Trondheim to Dombås. Turn onto E136 over Lesja og down Romsdalen.
During the summer: Turn off onto fv. 63, 5 kilometres before Åndalsnes at Sogge Brigde. The road leads you to Trollstigen, and futher on to Valldal and Geiranger.
During the winter: Stay on the E136 to Sjøholt. Turn off onto fv. 650 to Liabygda (from Liabygda you can choose to take the ferry to Stranda, 10 minutes) and on to Linge. From there you can take fv. 63 to Valldal, or the ferry to Eidsdal (10 minutes) and Geiranger.
