Location
Trollstigen is located approximately 15 kilometres south of Åndalsnes in the county of Møre og Romsdal, north in Fjord Norway. The region centre is Molde (25,000 inhabitants), which is the largest town in the area.
About the road
Trollstigen has a steep incline of 9 percent and consists of 11 hairpin bends up a steep mountainside. Encircling the road are lofty mountains. Names such as Kongen (the King), Dronningen (the Queen) and Bispen (the Bishop) confirm their majesty.
Stigfossen Waterfall gushes down the mountainside towards the luscious Isterdalen Valley. In the middle of all this, the Trollstigen Mountain Road winds its way up to Stigrøra (858 metres above sea level).

See Trollstigen, which is part of the National Tourist Routes project, from the new spectacular viewpoints. You can continue to Geiranger and take a fjord cruise on the UNESCO World Heritage listed Geirangerfjord.
Short walks to the two viewpoints with great views over Trollstigen, the Isterdalen Valley, the surrounding mountains and waterfalls, and Åndalsnes by the Romsdalsfjord. This is a "must" for anyone visiting Trollstigen.
The old Kløvstien Track at Trollstigen has for hundreds of years been an important link between Romsdalen and Sunnmøre before the Trollstigen Mountain Road was opened in 1936. The two hours walk up the Kløvstien Track begins in thick woodland, before opening out into impressive and wild views towards the mountains and the Stigfossen Waterfall. Some parts are steep, but they are well secured. Nevertheless, the walk is not recommended for small children.
Canoeing on the Istra River

Rafting down the Valldøla River
Feel the adrenalin pumping in your body. Join a rafting trip in the Valldøla River in the village of Valldal.
During late spring and early summer, Trollstigen is a popular goal for skiers. There are several mountains around Trollstigen ”designed” for skiing.
Hiking from Trollstigen to Bruraskaret at the edge of Trollveggen (the Troll Wall, 1,800 metres above sea level). The landscape is mighty and impressive, with a 1,000 metres vertical drop at the edge of Trollveggen. It can be difficult to see the path on parts of the walk, and it is recommended to use a local guide (eight to twelve hours hike).

In the Isterdalen Valley below Trollstigen, you will find Trollstigen Camping & Gjestegård.
Trollstigen Resort is situated at the bottom of the Isterdalen Valley, between Åndalsnes and Trollstigen. Cabins are available, and tents and camping cars are welcome.
Juvet Landscape Hotel, between Trollstigen and Valldal, aims to be different from other design hotels in that it showcases the nature that surrounds it rather than focusing on its own architecture. Stay at Juvet and you can almost feel spray from the Valldøla River on your face.
Facts about Trollstigen
- The six-kilometre long Trollstigen Mountain Road is normally open from mid-May to sometime in October, depending on when the snow arrives and when it melts.
- The Trollstigen Mountain Road is part of RV 63 in Rauma in Romsdal, Møre og Romsdal. The road connects Åndalsnes and Romsdal with Valldal and Sunnmøre.
- Vehicles more than 12.4 metres long are not allowed on Trollstigen.
- Trollstigen was opened on 31 July 1936 by King Haakon VII. The road took eight years to build. Even today, the road is a good example of the art of engineering and construction.
- The old Kløvstien Track at Trollstigen has for hundreds of years been an important link between Romsdalen and Sunnmøre. The newly restored Kløvstien path is now a popular hiking goal.
Getting to Trollstigen
Trollstigen in Romsdal is situated 20 kilometres from Åndalsnes and 80 kilometres from Molde, the largest town in the area. You can travel by car, train, boat or plane to Romsdal. Read more about getting to the Romsdal area.
By road: You can reach Trollstigen and Romsdal by car, it takes six hours from Oslo or four hours from Trondheim. From Oslo you drive up Gudbrandsdalen to Dombås, then down Lesja and Romsdal to Åndalsnes. From Trondheim you drive via Dovrefjell to Dombås and down the same way via Romsdal to Åndalsnes.
By train: Take the Dovre Railway to Dombås, then the the Rauma Railway (operated by the Norwegian State Railways - NSB) to the end-station Åndalsnes.
By Plane: The nearest airport is Molde Airport Årø.
