The mild climate in the area makes it possible to grow fruit and berries. Valldal is known for its strawberries, so if you are here in June or July, make sure you get a taste of the sweet berries. Or you could pay a visit to the local restaurant Jordbærstova in Valldal, and order their famous strawberry cake.
Linge, close to Valldal, is the northernmost place in the world where there are commercial fruit orchards - in the fruit season you can buy plums, apples and pears directly from the farmers.
If you want to buy jam and lemonade made from local berries, you should stop at Norsk Bærindustri in Valldal.
If you take a little detour to Herdalssetra, which is siutated within the UNESCO protected area, you will get really close to the origin of the local food. In the little café you can buy goat's milk caramel, "rømmegrøt" (porridge made from sour cream), cured ham and other specialities.
Goat (kid) meat from Herdalssetra, and trout from the Lake Herdal are also an important ingredients in the excellent food served at Petrines Gjestgiveri in Norddal. In 2006, Petrines Gjestgiveri was voted "The best place to eat along the road".
