10 northern lights experiences in Central Troms

A stable climate with snow and a moderate chill is ideal for skiing, sledding, ice fishing and snowmobiling. At night, the northern lights appear.

Skiing at Målselv fjellandsby

Målselv mountain resort is a huge alpine centre with slopes at all levels of difficulty, in a snowy and cold winter climate. Accommodation, restaurants and loads of outdoor activities can be found here.

Dog sledding in Tamokdalen

Dog sledding in the Tamokdalen Valley, surrounded on both sides by high peaks, is fun and fast-paced. In the dry climate here, you are really likely to see the northern lights. Read more about dog sledding in Tamokdalen.

Free skiing on Senja

The steep ocean coast of Senja is a challenge for all off-piste skiers. The season runs from February to May. Dare you climb up a 800–900 metre high mountain, and then ski run down? Senja Lodge offers guided trips.

Cross-border dog sledding

Do you want to drive your own sled, sleep in tents and get up close to the wild? Huskyfarm Innset offers dog sled tours lasting several days in Norway, Sweden and Finland all through the winter.

Winter fishing

From December to April, skrei (Norwegian Arctic cod) visit the ocean waters off Senja. You can hire boats and equipment from fishing villages along the coast and fish for huge cod. More information about winter fishing at hamnisenja.no.

Ice fishing on Altevatn

Join a snowmobile trip out onto the frozen Altevatn Lake close to the border with Sweden and try for char, while staying at the wilderness camp in the sunny late winter.

Ski trip along the Nordkalottleden

Skiing from cabin to cabin along the Nordkalottruta in the interior of Troms is a pleasure at the end of winter - fantastic terrain and mild daytime temperatures. Stay the night at the Norwegian Trekking Association's cabins. This is definitely for experienced skiers. You can organise this yourself.

Northern lights safari at Altevatn

Join an evening snowmobile trip on the frozen Altevatn Lake. Here, far from human habitation and in a dry climate, chances of seeing the northern lights dance above your head are good.

Sami heritage in Tamokdalen

Meet Sami reindeer herders and drive a reindeer sleigh through snowy winter landscapes between the mountain peaks. Dinner consists of a warming plate of bidos (reindeer stew) served in a Sami lavvo. Tours are organised by Lyngsfjord Adventure.
