Lost kingdoms: Wilderness and cultural tours in the Arctic

Welcome to the districts of Hamarøy and Tysfjord, which offer the very best of Scandinavian nature, Sami culture and North-Norwegian pride.

Activities

Summer/Autumn
Enjoy the historical and natural genuine splendour at the heart of Norway with Arctic Wilderness Experience (AWE). Journey with them on foot along ancient paths; listen to stories round the campfire that will awaken your soul; witness the majesty of this unspoilt wilderness kingdom stretching hundreds of miles from the spectacular fjord coastline to the central mountains of Northern Scandinavia. These hikes can be combined with fjord boat journeys and fishing. The itineraries suit both young and old travellers in good physical condition.

Winter/Spring
The winter landscape of snow and ice has a dream-like quality under the Northern LightsSkiing of course is a must, and just as important as the evening open fire in the log cabin. If you are looking for peace and some real silence, then it is here for the taking.

Feeling at one with nature, however, is just half the experience. The tales of the Sami go back thousands of years, and their cultural heritage is rich and varied. Norway's largest fish stocks visit the nearby fjords, and the local people want you to come and enjoy the wonderful cultural and culinary delights that are the hallmarks of North Norwegian tourism. Programmes can be arranged to cater for a host of interests.

AWE also offers visitors the unusual opportunity to live in a traditional timber "Nordland" house from 1850. Stay here for a few days, a week, perhaps longer, and enjoy rustic Norwegian nature and hospitality at its best.

Getting there

AWE is based on the island of Finnøy, 25 kilometres west of the village of Innhavet along the E6 highway, approximately halfway between Bodø and NarvikBodø Airport is the main airport for the region, about three hours south of AWE's headquarters.

About Arctic Wilderness Experience

AWE was established 20 years ago and is a certified Norwegian ecotourism company. It is a small family business run by Robin Buzza and Kitty Skapalen, two Arctic enthusiasts who like nothing better than to share their interest with their guests.
