During the sailing time, the 17 - and 1800s Åkerøya was an important place with shoemaker, 2 schools, shops, maritime school and shipping companies. At the most there were about 400 inhabitants on the island, but today there are around 30-40 people living here.
The summer at Åkerøya is very idyllic and the island is perfect for a visit, small white wooden houses and beautiful walkways around the island. The island also has a small interior shop which is open in July.
You must have your own boat, or you can take the summer ferry M/B Øya to the island.
