Hiking in Setesdal

Setesdal is a hiking eldorado in Southern Norway, with a landscape that varies from flat lowlands to wild mountains.

The small villages in the Setesdal Valley are situated along the main route between the port of Kristiansand and the western fjords. Along the way, the landscape changes from the gentle terrain in the far south to the high mountains in Hovden in the north. Wherever you stop, you will find great hiking opportunities nearby – choose between short trips or multi-day hikes from cabin to cabin.

When

The hiking season in Setesdal usually lasts from the middle of June until October.

Hiking possibilities

In the southern parts, Berg in Valle is a good starting point for longer hikes from cabin to cabin. In Valle there are post boxes where you can write your name in a guestbook. In Bygland and Evje there are also plenty of trips to choose from, whether you wish to embark on a day trip or just a short afternoon walk.

In the northern parts of the valley, you will find day trips to peaks with breathtaking views from several locations. In Hovden, there are marked summit climbs suitable for the whole family, and you may even be awarded a diploma on completing the trip.

You can walk for days in the mountains, but remember that you need to bring sufficient equipment. The weather can change rapidly and it is vital to bring a map and a compass.

If you prefer the comfort of a charming place in the valley, there are several camping sites, cabins, hotels and apartments to choose from.

How to get there

Setesdal in Southern Norway is easily accessible by car, coach, air or ferry.
