Budget holiday in Southern Norway

Traveling in Norway on a budget opens up a chance to experience some real adventure and see the beautiful places hidden for most tourists.

There are activities in Southern Norway from Risør to Flekkefjord that suit a holiday on a budget, like hiking, bicycling and canoeing. Groups or families can enjoy the cabin life, either along the sea or in the woods. The seaside cabins tend to be pricy in the main season, but if you come in the spring or the autumn, there are ample opportunities to find lovely cabins for a good price.

Hiking

The Norwegian Trekking Association has cabins scattered in the woods and mountains all over Southern Norway, and they have lighthouses along the coast with accommodation based on the same system.

Lighthouse holiday

Stay in a lighthouse separated from the mainland. Sit on the skerries and watch the waves wash the smooth, coastal rocks, see the glowing sunset in the west, and go to bed while it’s still light outside. Let the sound of the sea be your lullaby, and wake up early enough to be out there with the seabirds while the sun rises from the water in the east. Read more about Lighthouse holiday.

City break on a budget

It’s also possible to have a city break on a budget. There is reasonable-priced accommodation in Kristiansand  town. The many restaurants available make it possible to find meals in your chosen price range. Or you can do what the Norwegians do, buy some fresh-baked bread, some fresh shrimps from the store or the fish market, and sit down by the harbour or on the beach and peel shrimps while the sun is shining. A relaxing meal, and so tasty!

Hotels

In Kristiansand you´ll find a couple of budget hotels. Nice rooms and a nice price! Take a look at Yess Hotel or Budget Hotel Kristiansand

Cabins

Rent a cabin with your family, either along the sea or in the woods. The seaside cabins tend to be somewhat pricy in July, but if you come in the spring or the autumn, there is ample opportunity to find lovely cabins for a good price.

Activities

There are activities from Risør to Flekkefjord that suit a holiday on a budget. Art galleries and museums are also recommended, they are either free of charge, for instance a visit to the Bomuldsfabriken Art Hall in Arendal or the museums in Bykle. Most museums have reasonable-priced tickets. Concerts are held in towns all over Southern Norway during the summer season, and many are outdoor concerts free of charge.

Just being here, on the Norwegian Riviera, relaxing on the beach, hiking in the mountains, sipping at your coffee in a outdoor restaurant while watching the teeming town life in the south. That's sometimes all you need!
