Overview
Details

In Bjørkedalen in Volda municipality you can see the beautiful ships that Jakob Helset has built. The ships are not replicas of Viking ships that have been excavated, but are inspired by Norwegian boat building tradition, and are shaped like Viking ships. They are very seaworthy and excellent rowing/sailing boats, and a 1-2 hour sightseeing trip on Bjørkdalsvatnet water is a refreshing and unique experience. The small community has got long traditions when it comes to boatbuilding, and during a sightseeing trip in one of these beautiful boats you can feel how they have been able to master the Norwegian nature for centuries.

Bjørkedalen is also known for its special natural resources, and there are large amounts of the mineral olivine to be found here.

By the southern part of Bjørkedalen you'll find the old post route "Den Gamle Postveien", that was constructed on royal command during the 1700s. You can follow this lovely road past Gullbrekka to Medvatnet Water and Olavskjelda Fountain, and all the way to the cross that is a monument to remember the king Holy Olav.
