Overview

Stranda School - Klokkarvik.

At 284 meters, Veten is the highest point in Sund. From the first Sunday in advent until the 20th day of Christmas, a shining beacon brightens the inhabitants of the surrounding villages. For centuries there have been trails leading from all the villages to the church at Sund (Klokkarvik) and many of the paths still exist. One of the most popular runs between Stranda school and Førde. It is part of the North Sea Trail, but the path turns before it reaches the top of Veten. The new plan is to redirect this trail to lead over Veten.

You can park your car at Stranda school (near the Spar shop at Forland, a couple of kilometers north-east of Panorama Conference Hotel). The trail leads over rocks, streams and through forest before climbing steeply at Strandafjellet. If you head over Rinde you come to "Fadraborde" (ancestor’s table), where there is a large stone slab on a grassy embankment. Legend has it that children were christened at Fadraborde. The name is probably derived from this, a natural table on which to set up a font and a place where one could rest and refresh. It’s a great place to take a break on your walk and there is also a visitor’s book.

From Fadraborde the path leads to the top of Veten. In good weather you can enjoy panoramic views of the area – some even claim to be able to see Shetland to the west! There’s a visitors’ book on Veten too, where hikers compete to get the most number of hikes to the top during the year.

After admiring the view, you can go down diagonally and join the North Sea Trail from Nyatrævatnet. From here the path continues to the north side of Førdesvatnet lake and down to Førdesdalen valley. Many end or start their walk at Førde, but if you continue further you pass a nice farmyard with stone buildings and the forest at Børnesvatnet lake. Just before you come to the Sund church, called Skautakleiva, is where women changed into their finest clothes ready for church.

The trip takes about 3 hours, the length is 7 km and highest peak is 284moh.
