Discover Jæren

According to the Norwegian author Alexander L. Kielland, Jæren is the place for seasoned tourists looking for something more.

Drive along Fv510 to Sola, turn off towards the airport and Sola Ruinkirke (church ruins), continue south alongside Solastranda beach and head towards Fv510 to Bore, turn off onto Fv507. The recreation centre at Orre provides information about the Jæren beaches and wilderness conservation area. Take time out to enjoy a cup of coffee at the café here.

Continue south on Fv507 and make a right turn on to Fv44. Just beside the road, you will find MingarWalker Glassblåseri (glassblowers) where you can buy a souvenir to take home with you. Make a detour to Hå old vicarage, which is a cultural centre, located right beside the sea. On your way you’ll pass Obrestad harbour and Obrestad lighthouse.

A short drive takes you to the regional Jær Museum (and science centre). Through interactive exhibitions and experiments you get acquainted with the landscape, building, traditions and culinary traditions in Norway’s main area for food production.

Continue southwards to Varhaug and turn onto Fv504, following it a few kilometres before turning off onto Fv505. North of Nærbø is Garborgheimen, author Arne Garborg’s childhood home. If you drive to Undheim you will arrive at Knudaheio, his summer residence.

Make a detour to Fotland and come face to face with something highly unusual in these parts – a waterfall! Also, take the turn off at Time church and head for Herikstad and pay a visit to Linloftet. Continue along Fv 505 towards Sandnes. At Foss-Eikeland, Sandnes Garn has factory outlets in the same premises. Continue northwards to Sandnes and Stavanger.
