Aursjøvegen mountain road

People have crossed the mountain between the Sunndal and Eikesdal valleys since time immemorial. The great open expanses are the domain of mountain enthusiasts. The road starts in the small town of Sunndalsøra and ascends the narrow Litldalen valley. The road twists and turns as it climbs up to the mountain plateau. Descending Finsetlia hill, there are more, even sharper bends and views that can make more famous mountain roads «green with envy». In the Eikesdalen valley; 10-kilometre-long lake and Mardalsfossen waterfall (20.06-20.08) - a king among waterfalls - before the road takes you down to the Eresfjord. Take time for a trip on the tourist ferry on Eikesdalsvatnet lake.

Along Aursjøvegen there are several hiking trails, viewpoints and places for picnic. Aursjøen and other mountain waters are suited for fishing and canoeing. Litledalen is famous for challenging rock climbing, as well as ice climbing during winter. Use your bicycle to go around Aursjøvegen - hundreds of cyclists do this every year for the Aursjøritt bicycle race.

There are also guided trips along Eikesdalen's Via Ferrata - a airy and great trip! On the high mountain there is an extensive network of hiking trails, and some say you will find some of Norway's greatest mountain areas here. After a 400 metres light walk from the car road, you will find yourself on the edge of Aurstupet, with many hundreds of metres of cliff below you.

Aursjøvegen is a toll road, car NOK 50,-, caravan/minibus NOK 100,- and motorcycles are free. Originally Aursjøvegen was built as a construction road for the development of Aura power station 1927-50 and later expanded to Eikesdalen. Total length: Sunndalsøra - Eresfjord: 100 km.
