All the recommended cycling routes are featured on special cyclist maps that you can buy from Bike Norway, at tourist offices or bookshops.

The routes are signposted and follow roads that have little or no automobile traffic. You will find places to rent cycles and cycle-friendly accommodation along the routes.

Rallarvegen (the Navvies' Road)

Rallarvegen is one of the most popular and most scenic bicycle rides from the vast mountain plateau of Hardangervidda right down to Flåm and the Aurlandsfjord, or Voss.

The journey from Hallingskeid to Vatnhalsen can be described as the most spectacular and impressive with its sharp downward slope and thundering waterfalls. The Klevagjelet orge and Kleven Bridge are unforgettable. We recommend that you walk beside the bike as you descend the gorge.

As the name suggests the name Rallarvegen dates from the time the navvies used it as a road during the construction of the Bergen Railway. The Bergen Railway was opened in 1909.

There are places selling refreshments along the route.

There are places selling refreshments along the route. If you wish to stay overnight whilst cycling Rallarvegen, we recommend that you book in advance. If you want to stay in contact with the nature, bring your tent along and sleep outside.

If you are staying in Flåm, you can take the train to Haugastøl or Finse to start your cycling trip. You can hire bikes at both Haugastøl or Finse, and from the tourist office in Flåm.

Season: Mid-July to September (subject to snow-free road conditions)

Start: Haugastøl or Finse (alternatively you can start from Hallingskeid)

Finish: Flåm or Voss

Distances:
Haugastøl – Flåm: 80 kilometres
Finse – Flåm: 57 kilometres
Haugastøl – Voss: 108 kilometres

Duration: One or more days

Transportation: The Bergen Railway (operated by the Norwegian State Railways - NSB) and the Flåm Railway.

The North Sea Cycle Route through Rogaland

This cycling route runs through the southernmost tip of Western Norway. From Egersund you cycle along the old, abandoned west coast highway to Ogna where you meet the first of many sandy beaches, then follow the coast on the old Kongeveien, through Brusand and Vigrestad to the Old Vicarage at Hå.

The route northwards is dotted with beautiful, sandy beaches. From Sola you have the choice of cycling inland to Sandnes and then along the Gangsfjorden to Stavanger or of following the coast through Sola to Tungenes Fyr. The ferry from Mekjarvik takes you to Skudeneshavn and from there the route follows the coast to Haugesund.

There are exciting opportunities for island hopping by bike. Take the ferry out to one of the Ryfylke islands, for example Kvitsøy or Finnøy.

Season: All year (subject to weather conditions)

Start: Flekkefjord or Egersund

Finish: Haugesund

Distance: 296 kilometres

The Vestfjord Route including Lofoten (round trip)

Mainland cycling and island hopping along the Vestfjord route is an unforgettable experience. New, breathtaking sights appear around every bend. Whatever the weather, there is something distinctive and awe-inspiring about this part of Nordland.

The route includes Bodø, Kjerringøy, Steigen, Engeløya, Hamarøy, the Lofoten Islands, Raftsundet and Værøy. Be aware that there is heavy traffic along the E 10 in Lofoten during July and August.

Season: All year (subject to weather conditions)

Start/finish: Bodø

Distance: Approximately 400 kilometres

Voss - Bergen

The bike routes between Voss and Bergen are quiet, low traffic roads that ribbon through majestic mountains and clear blue waters of the fjords. It takes the cyclist in close contact with rivers, waterfalls and fjords, a great experience for both adults and children. Overnight stays are recommended for those interested in more relaxation, fishing and swimming.

NB! Avoid the main road E16 from Evanger to Dale, and from Stanghelle to Bergen.

Season: May to September (subject to snow-free road conditions)

Start: Voss or Bergen

Finish: Bergen or Voss

Distance: 118 kilometres
