The Norwegian winter may be long – it lasts from November to April – but at its best, it is a real winter wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts in general and anglers in particular. The next catch is often quite literally on your doorstep with plenty of specialised winter accommodation offers for anglers.
A winter holiday in Norway is suitable for everyone who long for tranquility in pristine surroundings. Under the surface at sea, however, there is no such thing as peace and calm this time of year. Every year in January, huge numbers of skrei (migrating cod) appear along the Norwegian coast, much to the delight of visiting anglers who quickly get used to bent fishing rods. Thanks to the Gulf Stream and warm air currents from the sea, caused by the coriolis effect, the winters along the Norwegian coast and in Fjord Norway are surprisingly mild, giving anglers plenty of opportunities to get their dream catch. The conditions are ideal for large specimens, so take the opportunity to challenge yourself and improve your personal record. As a plus, Norwegian waters are full of other types of fish. With a little bit of luck, you can get almost any type of saltwater fish on the hook.
The numerous inland lakes show no signs of slowing down in the winter either. When the lakes are covered in ice, they are usually teeming with trout, char, perch, pike and burbot. Ice fishing is one of the most popular winter activities in Norway, together with downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and hiking. At the end of an eventful day outdoors, do it like the locals and wind down in a steaming sauna or snuggle up in front of an open fire. In Northern Norway, you also have a good chance to spot whales and experience spectacular natural phenomena like the northern lights. Another recommended pastime is to go dog sledding.
Norway's fishing grounds are easily accessible and there is a wide range of accommodation options, many of which offer private boat hire, equipment and fish-cleaning facilities. Please see our selection of accommodation offers below for more information and to make a booking.
