There are many places in the Norwegian mountains offering highly qualified guides who can give you an even better experience than you get walking on your own. The guide gives you the little extra; what’s the name of that flower, how was the mountain terrain created, why is the glacier situated where it is, how and when were the fjords created.
When walking with a guide, you can go into parts of the mountains that are not recommendable to experience on your own. Mountain climbing and glacier walking are two examples.
There are 20 glaciers in Norway. The Jostedalsbreen Glacier is the largest one, covering and area of 487 square kilometres. There are guided walks in most glacier areas, which make the wild snow and ice landscapes accessible to even the most inexperienced hiker. Security always has the highest priority. You will always walk in groups, tied together with a rope, carrying an axe, wearing a helmet on your head and crampons under your boots.
You can choose hikes with different themes, for instance history. There is a guided hike in Rjukan called The saboteur’s route, where you learn about the resistance to Hitler’s development of nuclear weapons in this area of Norway. Another guided hike in this category goes along the Pilgrim’s route to Trondheim, which is full of interesting history.
