Norwegian beaches receive exclusive eco award

Six Norwegian beaches have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag eco-label this year.

The six Norwegian beaches to have been awarded the Blue Flag eco-label this year (2011) are:

  • Bystranda and Hamresanden in Kristiansand
  • Sjøstrand and Hvalstrand in Asker, not far from Oslo
  • Storøyodden in Bærum, just outside Oslo
  • Helleneset in Bergen

The award is handed out by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), which is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation promoting sustainable development through environmental education.

The Blue Flag works towards sustainable development at beaches and marinas by awarding sites that meet strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and other services.

Some 3,650 beaches and marinas in 41 countries in Europe, Tunisia, Morocco, South Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean have been awarded the Blue Flag eco-label this year.
