Hiking in Trøndelag

Enjoy both nature and culture experiences hiking in Central Norway. Trøndelag boasts seven national parks as well as Norway’s famous Pilgrims’ Route.

The feeling of walking in untouched nature is a special one, and in Trøndelag this feeling can often be experienced, although civilisation is never very far away. Trondheim, with its 300,000 inhabitants, is the pulsating heart of Trøndelag, and an ideal starting point for discovering the region. The smaller towns of Røros, Oppdal and Selbu all have a good infrastructure. On the coast, you will find the mountains and charming archipelagos. Inland areas such as Innherred are characterised by a rich cultural history, while mountain areas have spectacular summits and flatter regions with beautiful fishing lakes.

When

The best time for hiking in Central Norway is from June to October.

Hiking possibilities

At the gateway to Blåfjella- Skjækerfjella National Park, you will find the geographical mid-point of Norway, which is a good day's walk away, as well as a popular start to longer trips in the national park. The seven national parks extend from Børgefjell in the north to Femundsmarka and Dovrefjell- Sunndalsfjella in the south, where you can try a musk deer safari for an unforgettable experience.

Trollheimen is known for its varied and dramatic scenery, featuring spectacular mountains. Most of the nature is protected as a landscape conservation area. These mountains have been used by humans since the Stone Age, and here you find cultural heritage and cultural landscape that tell a rich history.

Surrounded by myths, the majestic Sylan Massif has lured mountain tourists since the 19th century and continues to do so to this day. Regardless of whether your goal is relaxation and pleasant company or adrenaline-pumping skiing and alpine climbing, the spectacular Sylan mountains offer genuine wilderness, well removed from everyday life.

Did you know that in the southern Sami language Sylane is "Bealjehkh", meaning "those who are provided with ears"? This is an appropriate name for the two pointed peaks of Storsylen (1,762 metres) and Storsola (1,728 metres), which jut out in the otherwise gentle mountains in Trøndelag.

The Pilgrims’ Route

It is said that when the grave of Olav II Haraldsson was opened a year after his death at the battle of Stiklestad, his hair and nails were still growing. Olav was therefore canonized and has been known as Olav the Holy ever since. Pilgrims have been travelling to his grave at the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim in search of help and solace. Pilgrimages start in Oslo in the south and from Sundsvall via Stiklestad in the east.

In 2010 the Pilgrims' Route to Trondheim and the Nidaros Cathedral were granted status as a European Cultural Trail, just like the routes to Santiago de Compostela. It is marked throughout with its own logo.

An alternative to the traditional Norwegian mountain routes, the Pilgrims' Route goes through urban areas, along roads, through magnificent cultural landscape, peaceful forests and deserted mountain areas. As you travel you can explore locations and cultural monuments from Norwegian history.

The web-based walking planner pilegrim.info will help you get started. Choose the stretch you would like to walk and how many days you want to spend en route, or select one of our suggested walks. You can print maps and other information from the website.

Guided hikes

Guided hikes are available in the region of Oppdal and Innherred. Musk ox safari in the Dovre Mountain area are very popular. Please see oppdalbooking.no. Contrast adventure.no offers guided hiking trips in the Trollheimen area close to Oppdal. Vistinnherred.com offers guided hikes to Norway's geographical mid-point as well as on the pilgrim path between Stiklestad and Munkeby.

Accommodation

Trøndelag offers a wide variety of accommodation options for hikers. In the mountains, DNT (the Norwegian Trekking Association) and TT Trondheim Turistforening (The Trondheim Trekking Association)  offer accommodation in several cabins. In towns like Røros, Oppdal, Selbu and Steinkjer you will find hotels near popular hiking areas. An accommodation network has also been established along the Pilgrims' Route, most of it of a simple standard.

How to get there

If you are planning to travel to Trøndelag by air, Trondheim Airport Værnes has very good domestic connections as well as direct flights from Copenhagen, Stockholm, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Reykjavik, Helsinki, Riga, Tallinn and Krakow.

The main roads to Trøndelag are E6 and E39. There are good daily bus and train connections from the north, south and east. Hurtigruten also stops daily in Trondheim on both its southbound and northbound route.
