The hiking season stretches from late June to September.

Tour suggestions

1. Hiking from the mountains to the fjords

This 11-day trip goes through terrain which varies from rocky paths to gravel roads. Daily hikes last from five to eight hours.

From Golsfjellet Mountain the first two stages towards Bergsjø in Ål present one day of easy hiking on good paths and small roads, and one day hiking in open terrain above the tree line, with mountains such as Reineskarvet and Blåbergi as a backdrop.

The following two legs, heading to Geilo, are characterised by slightly more varied terrain, with small lakes and open areas boasting great views. This stage also includes a hike to the plateau of Hardangervidda National Park.

The final stage starts with a train ride to Finse and a great hike across the St. Paul pass in Hallingskarvet National Park. From here you can enjoy the fantastic view over the Hardangerjøkul Glacier, before moving across the Aurlandsfjellet Mountain, and rounding up the tour with a hike down the spectacular Aurlandsdalen Valley

Price 2013: 10 nights €1, 900 / £1, 545. All prices are per person, staying in double room, full board (packed lunch on hiking days), local guide and luggage transfer. Intermediated stages such as Geilo to Aurland can be ordered separately. Transfer before and after the tour can be arranged.

2. Gol – Jostedalsbreen Glacier – the Hardangerfjord – Geilo

Experience an 11-day round trip with your own or rented car, exploring some of the best hiking areas in Norway.

Your accommodation on the tour can be in either chalets, apartments, or in hotels with breakfast included. From each destination you can go on suggested hikes or excursions, or just relax in the beautiful surroundings.

The first stage offers two nights at Golsfjellet Mountain in Hallingdal. From here you can go on an excursion to the south wall of Jotunheimen, or choose to go hiking in the beautiful scenery on Golsfjellet along good and well-marked paths.

Next stop is Jølster, by the Jostedalsbreen Glacier National Park. Here you will spend three nights with possible visits to Geiranger and the West Cape. The three- to six-hour walk to the magnificent glacier is fantastic. Why not join a real glacier hike?

From Jølster you move on to the Hardangerfjord where you will be staying for three nights. Here the stunning contrasts of steep mountains and narrow fjords await. You can also visit the Folgefonna Glacier, and even experience the city of Bergen. The five- to six-hour hike to Håsete Summer Farm, with its panoramic fjord view, is another highlight.

You will round up the tour with two nights in Geilo. Excursions from Geilo can either go to Finse or the wild animal park Langedrag. A hike to either Hallingskarvet or Hardangervidda National Park wraps up the tour perfectly.

All tours start and end in Oslo.

Price 2013: Included in the package are 10 nights of accommodation.

  • Chalet or apartment for two people: €1,780 / £1,445
  • Chalet or apartment for three or four people: €2,460 / £1,955
