There are around 29,000 proud inhabitants in Halden. During the summer months almost 300,000 people visit Fredriksten Fortress.

The total land area of Halden municipality is about 600 square kilometres. Halden is located in the county of Østfold, and borders to the Norwegian municipalities of Hvaler, Sarpsborg, Rakkestad and Aremark. The municipality also borders to the Swedish municipalities of Strömstad, Dals-Ed and Tanum.

Halden covers a wide area that includes some of nature's most beautiful sights. Forests, fjord, mountains, rivers, islands, skerries and unspoilt nature that gives super opportunities for memorable outdoor adventures.

Architecture

Halden is famous for its architecture. Much of the reconstruction after the great town fire in 1826 was in the prevalent architectural style of the time – the Empire style. Engineering officers Gedde and Garben and architect Grosch designed the new town. Today Halden is the most complete Empire style town in Norway.
