Buy porcelain in Porsgrunn or handmade silver jewellery in Western Telemark.

Shopping in the towns

Small shops and galleries can be found in the coastal towns of Brevik, Langesund and Kragerø. This area has a strong crafts tradition and you can purchase locally made artworks, textiles, clothing, jewelry and ceramics.

Shopping malls and larger chain stores can be found in the towns of Porsgrunn and Skien.

Specialities from Telemark

  • Porcelain
Norway's only porcelain factory (founded in 1885) is Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik (only in Norwegian). The factory is in an idyllic location beside the Porsgrunn River, and you can hunt for bargains at the factory outlet which is open all year round. The factory is open for advance bookings for groups and individual visitors. Here you can watch the production process from clay to the finished fired and decorated porcelain.
  • Silver works
In the middle of Vrådal jewellery, handicrafts and sports knives are produced in Sølvsmedtunet and Nisseloftet. They also sell beautiful handmade silver jewellery, plus silver accessories for the various local versions of the national costume. Nisseloftet has a Christmas shop and Christmas greetings card service in December.
You can watch a traditional Vinje silversmith at work at Telemarkssylv
  • Local food and drinks
Telemark also produces a lot of good local food
Vinje offers local stone oven baked bread, flat breads and delicious cured meats. You can also purchase these products to take home from Mjonøy Culture Centre
The area of Sauherad produces a quarter of Norway's apple harvest and produces several of Norway's best known apple juices.
  • Markets and fairs
Each year in Telemark, a number of exhibitions are held around the county, and especially in the summer season. Most of these are sales exhibitions, so here you will be able to buy unique works of paintings, pottery, textiles, wood carvings and other exciting objects. Check calendar for markets and fairs.
