Your adventure in Ålesund starts here

A one hour's drive from Ålesund will bring you to the mountain and fjord landscapes of the Sunnmøre Alps. This mountain area provides the perfect backdrop for unique skiing adventures - with a scenery guaranteed to take your breath away!

Enjoy powder snow and boundless areas for off-piste skiing, find your favourite slope or go for memorable cross-country trips with the family.

If the weather and ski conditions are not ideal one day, or you want to take part in other activities, join the Borgundfjord fishery in the hunt for big cod, go bird-watching on nearby Runde, or let your adrenaline loose on super surfing waves.

What to see

Ålesund might have been voted one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but there is more than architecture to call the traveller to its streets. With galleries, museums, great shopping, cosy cafes, sophisticated restaurants and more, Ålesund has an abundance of activities and attractions that will help create a truly unforgettable experience.

However, it is in winter that the city streets take on an even more magical air when everything is covered in crisp, white snow. Imagine the views that await you after climbing the 418 steps up to Mount Aksla, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region. Not only will you see this amazing city from an entirely new perspective, but you will also be able to look at the Sunnmøre Alps and the islands lying off the coast.

As beautiful as Ålesund is, it is sometimes difficult to believe that this splendour comes from tragedy. Fire raged through the centre of the city in 1904, destroying most of the homes. But, thanks to an incredible rebuilding effort, the city had risen, phoenix-like from the flames, by 1907.

If you want to learn about the city's history , a must-visit is  Jugendstilsenteret (Art Nouveau Centre), which offers a fascinating insight into the story of the great fire and features a time machine taking you back a century in time.

Also Aalesunds Museum offers an exciting insight into Ålesund’s history through artefacts, models, photographs and paintings and it is well worth a visit.

Life under the sea is on display at the Atlantic Sea Park, one of the largest aquariums in Scandinavia. Atlanterhavsparken is situated in the midst of a scenic area with hiking paths, monuments, fishing grounds, and a beach where you can go swimming or scuba diving

Last but not least, Sunnmøre's open-air museum, beautifully situated in the old Borgundkaupangen, features cultural and historical exhibitions and a vast collection of old buildings and boats.

Explore the surrounding

Few places in the world can offer such striking scenery and untouched nature. Experience the bird island of Runde and the quaintly picturesque Alnes lighthouse. Visit the little community Flø, known for the art gallery of Hugo Opdahl and Moods of Norway Brand Store, with an unsheltered location next to the pebbled beaches. Be enchanted by the wild nature of Norangsdalen valley and sail into the dramatic Hjørundfjord surrounded by the magnificent Sunnmøre Alps. The beautiful Geirangerfjord is so unique it is included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and the dramatic and fascinating Atlantic Road are only a short distance away.

Powder paradise

Ålesund is an excellent starting point for skiing experiences that are really out of the ordinary. Distances between the ski resorts are short and a joint lift-pass, Alpepass, gives you the flexibility to choose the skiing experience that suits you best.

A ski bus takes you efficiently from Ålesund to Stranda, voted Norway’s best ski centre for off-piste skiers.

Do you dream about virgin downhill runs on snow-clad mountainsides? Local guides take you to little known mountain areas where the best and only means of access is by boat. In the last few years Ski & Sail in the Sunnmøre Alps and the Hjørundfjord area has become increasingly popular. You can sail from place to place on the fjord and explore different summits every day.

Endless areas of powder snow and off-piste skiing combined with stunning fjord views make for a unique experience very unlikely to be found anywhere else in the world. The region is also at the top end of the European snow statistics every year.
