Romsdalen is known as the birthplace of mountaineering, and the mountains here are just waiting to be explored. You can choose to take a short afternoon walk along the old Vardeveg road to the Varden viewpoint in Molde, or opt for a much more challenging hike on the Romsdalseggen ridge near Åndalsnes. There are numerous marked trails, as well as many organised hikes – suitable for both keen hikers and families.
From Kristiansund Airport Kvernberget you can join the Fjord Route (Fjordruta), which heads north along the coastline and into the mountains of Nordmøre. The path is well marked from cabin to cabin. In Innerdalen in Trollheimen, one of the most picturesque valleys in Norway, you can climb up the Innerdalstårnet, go glacier walking on the largest glacier in Central Norway, or simply enjoy local food made on site while you relax in fantastic surroundings.
The northern part of Fjord Norway offers a landscape full of contrasts and activities for everyone.
There are many short and easy walks suited for families in the region. Jogging shoes are enough for such tours, and no special equipment is needed. Remember to bring a snack or a packed lunch – there are many places to stop for a rest.
Here is a selection of medium hard hikes lasting from one to three hours, and taking you no higher than 400 metres above sea level. Hiking boots or sturdy shoes are recommended for these walks. Remember to bring clothes for changing conditions, as well as water and a snack.
The region has many mountain peaks rising as high up as 1,800 metres above sea level. You must be properly equipped with sturdy hiking boots and clothes for changing weather conditions. Be prepared for steep hills and in parts narrow paths. Be aware of snow conditions in early spring, when there may still be snow left on the ground. Remember to bring food, drinks, a map and a compass. Another option is to join a guided hike, and enjoy the safety and company of an experienced guide.
DID Adventure, Contrast Adventure, Norgesguidene (pages only in Norwegian), Molde og Romsdals Turistforening (pages only in Norwegian), Bre & Fjell, Høyt og Lavt (pages only in Norwegian), Trollheimen Aktiv and Norsk Gåsehud all offer guided hikes.
