Voss has everything you need from a ski resort – wilderness, empty slopes, terrain that caters to all abilities and most importantly, stunning scenery.
Consisting of two ski areas, Voss Resort and Voss Fjellandsby Myrkdalen, this Fjord Norway region has altogether 55 kilometres of well-prepared slopes and 18 efficient lifts. Both ski areas also have great opportunities for nordic skiing. Voss Fjellandsby Myrkdalen is situated in Myrkdalen, a 25 minute drive from Voss town centre. Traditionally Myrkdalen receives more snow than most destinations in Norway in one year and at the end of last season there were up to 5 metres of powder in the highest parts of the ski area. The season is long in Myrkdalen, with the resort usually opening in November and closing in May. If you wish to take your skis outside the 13 slopes you have a vast area of opportunities for nice trekking and off-piste experiences. The cabins, apartments and hotel rooms are in near proximity to the 7 lifts as well as a grocery store and restaurant serving local produce and international food.
After a 2-hour drive from Myrkdalen, past the Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord as well as Lærdalstunnellen – the longest road tunnel in the world, you find the village of Marifjøra where you can stay at the charming Tørvis Hotel As an old trade post, Tørvis has received visitors since the 1880s from as far away as South Africa, London and Shanghai. With spectacular views of the Lustrafjord from your balcony, ski slopes behind and the Nigardsbreen glacier half an hour away, Tørvis is the perfect location for a classy and relaxing stay whilst enjoying the best nature experiences in both summer and winter. Nearby are popular attractions such as Urnes Stave Church, the only stave church on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and Feigumfossen, with a drop of 218 metres. From Marifjøra, you can drive up the scenic valley of Jostedalen to the foot of the Nigardsbreen glacier. Nigardsbreen is part of the Jostedal Glacier, the largest glacier on the European mainland, and has a visitor centre with guided trips. In summer you can drive to the car park and then hike or get the boat to the foot of the glacier, where you join an experienced guide for a trip up on the ice. In winter you cannot hike on the glacier but a visit to the blue ice caves is a special experience as is the cross country or snowshoe trip across the frozen lake to get to the glacier.
