The North Cape

When standing on the cliff at the North Cape, mainland Europe’s northernmost point, only the Svalbard Islands separate you from the North Pole.

When the clouds cover the ocean with a colourful, heavenly carpet, and the midnight sun is at its lowest, this is one of the most special places on earth. You do not get further north in mainland Europe - you are at the end of the world.

Getting to the North Cape

The nearest village is Honningsvåg. From here you take a bus or drive your own car. The North Cape Tunnel Toll costs NOK 145 each way for a standard car. It is the same price if you bring a trailer or drive a caravan. Additionally, you will have to pay NOK 47 per adult and NOK 24 per child. Please note that from July 2012 you will no longer have to pay to go through the tunnel.

Between 1 November and 30 April, the road is closed for private cars, and you must join the daily bus from Honningsvåg. It is recommendable to buy the ticket one day in advance.

Northern lights

The North Cape, which lies in the vast county of Finnmark, is one of many good places in Northern Norway to see the northern lights.

Visitor centre at the North Cape

At the North Cape you will find a visitor centre with modern facilities. In addition to the famous "Children of the World" monument, there is a museum and a restaurant here.

Entrance fee (as of 2011):
Adults: NOK 235
Children: NOK 80

The first tourist came here in 1664, and a stream of curious visitors has followed ever since. People from all parts of the world spend days and weeks travelling to come here to experience the freedom and closeness to the cold north.
