Winter is a very special, magical time in Northern Norway, with the landscape and light changing constantly and no two days the same. To many the northern lights are an unforgettable sight, and in Narvik the skies are especially clear and great for observing this phenomenon. Winter also means skiing, and Narvik's ski resort, Narvikfjellet, offers some of the best extreme and alpine skiing in Norway.

With a famous and unforgettable view of the fjords and mountains, Narvik has for years been known worldwide for the unique ski terrain it offers. It is not only tourists and locals who visit Narvikfjellet every winter, but journalists, photographers and television crews wanting to see and experience what they so far have only heard or read about.

The peak season lasts from February to early April, although April and May can be spectacular too, often with fantastic dry snow and an incredible light lasting well into the evening. 

Alping skiing

Narvikfjellet boasts 9 prepared slopes, prepared and maintained to a high standard. There are also 4 unprepared slopes and 6 lifts, including a gondola line. Ski lifts bring visitors quickly and efficiently to the next level without much of a queue.

Cross-country skiing

There are 12 kilometres of cross-country ski trails at Narvik resort. You need to bring your own skis as there is no cross-country hire in Narvik or at Narvikfjellet. However, equipment can be bought at local sports shops in and around Narvik.

Off-piste skiing

In addition to the network of marked trails for both cross-country and alpine skiing, there is an incredible number of exciting opportunities for off-piste skiing. 

In order to exploit Narvik's off-piste opportunities you need to be aware of avalanche dangers when selecting routes. It is recommend that you bring necessary equipment such as shovel, probe, and a GPS locator.

Ski hire

It is possible for adults and children to rent skiing equipment for snowboard, Telemark and alpine skiing. All equipment is prepared for use. Narvikfjellet has made a big equipment upgrade for the 2010-2011 season. If you would like to pre-book your equipment, please email Narvikfjellet.

Narvik without skis

Sometimes it is nice to do something different and not everybody enjoys skiing. Here are some ideas for what to do and what to see in Narvik in the winter time:

Dining and nightlife

When skiing in Narvikfjellet you should visit the restaurant at 800 metres over the sea. Here you can eat a nice meal while enjoying the spectacular view over the endless Ofotfjord and the many mountains surrounding it. You can also eat famous norwegian food at Kroa at the Quality Hotel Grand Royal Narvikor the Astrup Kjelleren. If you want to try something very unique you should visit Tinja Gård, a 20-minute drive north of Narvik. The restaurant offers high class dinners with fine wines and meat from their own backyard.

The typical places to go if you are thirsty after a long day skiing would be Spor 1 and Litt Større Plass. If you like to dance you should visit Malmen. All these places and several others are either in or close to the centre of Narvik.
