Hiking in Nordland

From the UNESCO-listed Vega to the rugged peaks of the Lofoten Islands, you can hike in the midnight sun almost 24 hours a day in Northern Norway.

When

The best time for hiking in Nordland is from mid-June to September.

Hiking possibilities

The island of Vega is surrounded by 8,000 small islands and known for its birdlife – especially the eider duck and its relevance to the local economy. This relationship between bird and locals has put Vega on UNESCO's world heritage site.

Trollvasstind is the highest top in the area, 799 metres above sea level. The hike to the top takes about five hours, the path is marked and can easily be done without a guide.

Lofoten and Vesterålen offer a lot of different hiking opportunities. The Queen’s Trail (Dronningruten) from Stø in Vesterålen can be combined with whale-watching on day two. The trail is marked.

It is possible to do a round-trip along two different routes - all together about eight hours hiking, depending on the length of the break in Nyksund.

The highest mountain in the area is Møysalen, 1,262 metres above sea level. It is located in Møysalen National Park. The hike takes about 10 hours.

Guided hikes

You can hike the Queen's Trail (Dronningruten) and Møysalen with a guide. Contact nyksund.com or  moeysalen.no for  more information and bookings.

Accommodation

Accommodation is offered in hotels and sea- or fishermen's cabins.

Getting there

To get to Lofoten/Vesterålen, fly from Oslo via Bodø to Svolvær or Oslo – Evenes and further by bus to Sortland. Or travel with Hurtigruten.

Vega is reached by plane from Oslo to Brønnøysund, by Hurtigruten or speed boat.
