The Grenland area has approximately 117,000 inhabitants and its main urban centre is Skien, which is where the county governor and county administration have their seat. Grenland takes its name from the ancient people who lived here, the Grener, and the area was formerly known as "the land of the Grener". A well-known historical figure from Grenland, as his nickname reveals, was the petty king Harald Grenske, who was also the father of Harald Hårfagre (Harald Fairhair).Grenland is known for its industry, and fertilisers have been produced at Herøya in Porsgrunn since 1929.
