Key facts about the Kristiansand Region

Kristiansand, the capital of Southern Norway, is the fifth largest city in Norway.

Geography

Since its founding in 1641, Kristiansand has grown to become the capital of Southern Norway; a modern trade, cultural and communications centre.

Kristiansand is situated on the very south coast of Norway, facing the European continent and surrounded by water on three sides. Although the whole town centre fits within one square kilometre, it is Norway’s fifth largest city, with a population of about 83,000 inhabitants.

There are seven municipalities in the region:

  • Kristiansand
  • Søgne
  • Songdalen
  • Vennesla
  • Iveland
  • Birkenes
  • Lillesand

Climate

The temperature in the summer is pleasant, about 21 degrees Celsius.

History

Historically, Kristiansand has been a busy international shipping port, a role that is still emphasised by the growing number of companies supplying personnel, equipment and services to the North Sea oil industry and the rest of the world.
