Seasons and climate in Eastern Norway

Summer lasts from June to August in Eastern Norway. Winter is cold and spring is fresh. During autumn the landscape is painted in vibrant colours.

Summer

Late June to early August is when summer is at its peak. This is when the weather is at its most stable and warmest with sunny, long and bright days.

It is not unusual with temperatures reaching 25°C and above. At the same time there is hardly any humidity in the air. Sea temperatures reach 18°C and higher, making swimming a popular pastime.

Autumn

This season sees the arrival of a landscape painted in bright red, yellow and orange. Berries and mushrooms are plentiful in the mountains and forests. This is the time for walks in fresh, crisp air. However, there can be quite heavy rainfalls during autumn and gradually the days become shorter.

During autumn the land areas lose more heat than the sea, and eventually the coastal areas have the highest temperatures. In September the outer part of the Oslofjord usually has the highest mean temperatures.

Winter

Mountain regions in Eastern Norway usually get the first snow in November. Winter typically lasts until April. Inland areas can have very low mean winter temperatures - temperatures can reach -40°C, but this does not happen each winter. By contrast, the coastal areas have comparatively mild winters. However, wind, rain and clouds can be frequent and heavy.

Spring

After a long winter, spring is much welcomed. May to mid-June sees trees and flowers waking to life, snow in the mountains and melt water swelling the waterfalls.

In May, the southern parts of Eastern Norway have some of the highest temperatures in the country. However, the weather in spring can be very varied. There may be days when it is cold enough to snow, and days when it is warm enough to sit outside in the sunshine. Spring months can also be very windy.

Remember that the weather and temperatures can change quickly, especially in the mountains. So whether summer or winter, autumn or spring – bring good footwear and warm clothes.
