Hiking from cabin to cabin

The Norwegian Trekking Association offers marked trails all over Norway. Stay at a new cabin or hotel each night, and explore large mountain areas.

Cabins, trails and routes

DNT operates cabins, marked routes and ski tracks, and arrange trips and courses.

Tours, courses and activities

Each year, more than 4,000 tours, courses and other activities draw more than 100,000 participants. DNT offers mountain sports and adventure activities, and each year arranges courses in mountaineering and glacier hiking. You do not need to be a member of DNT to join the trips, but an additional non-member price makes it affordable to sign up as a member.

Across Jotunheimen

Tour code: 3210/13

This is one of DNT's oldest tours and you will visit the most popular part of the Jotunheimen National Park, and experience one of Norway's highest summits, Glittertind. You will cross the Besseggen Ridge, the most popular hike in Norway. This will be a fantastic experience if you are in good physical shape.

Route:
Day 1: Meet at Oslo Bus Terminal at the platform 20 minutes before departure. The platform number is shown on the monitors in the departure hall. Departure at 9:30 am with the Valdresekspressen Bus.

Day 2: Hike from Gjendesheim (984 metres above sea level), crossing Veslfjellet Mountain (1,722 metres above sea level) and across the famous Besseggen Ridge. Scree and some steep parts. Down to the Memurubu Lodge (984 metres above sea level). Time: Seven hours.

Day 3: Steep climb up from Memurubu, along the west side of Lake Russvatn (1,175 metres above sea level), through the mountain pass Hestlægerskaret to Glitterheim Lodge (1,374 metres above sea level). Time: Seven hours.

Day 4: Stay at Glitterheim. Ascend of Norway's second highest peak, Glittertind (2,464 metres above sea level) if conditions allow.

Day 5: Hike across Skautflya (1,550 metres above sea level) and down to Spiterstulen Lodge (1,104 metres above sea level). Spiterstulen has an indoor pool and sauna. Time: Five hours.

Day 6: Hike up the Visdalen Valley, through Kyrkjeglupen (1,460 metres above sea level) and on to Leirvassbu Lodge (1,401 metres above sea level). Time: Five hours. 

Day 7: Hike across Høgvaglen (1,445 metres above sea level) and down Storådalen to Gjendebu Lodge (984 metres above sea level). Time: Six hours.

Day 8: Steep hike up Bukkelægeret, crossing the peak Sjugurdtinden (1,450 metres above sea level) and down to Memurubu Lodge (984 metres above sea level). Time: 5 hours. Boat to Gjendesheim. Departure by bus from Gjendesheim at 5:20 pm. Arrival at Oslo Bussterminal 10:10 pm.

Rondane in a nutshell

This hike will take you through the heart of Rondane National Park, in only a few days. You start in the east and gradually rise through the forest and above the timber line towards this impressive mountain range.

For those interested in geology, nature here shows you how the landscape has been formed by the help of the glaciers throughout history.

Route:
Day 1: Departure at 8:07 am with the Trondheim train, from Oslo Central Station. Meet at entrance to the platform 20 minutes before departure. Bus to Rondetunet. A five-hour hike to Bjørnhollia Lodge (892 metres above sea level).

Day 2: Hike through the Illmanndalen Valley to Rondvassbu Lodge (1,167 metres above sea level). Time: Four hours.

Day 3: Hike up Rondhalsen (1,647 metres above sea level) and a steep walk down to Lake Rondvatnet (1,167 metres above sea level). On to Øvre Dørålseter Lodge (1,050 metres above sea level). Time: Five hours.

Day 4: Hike through the fascinating, but rocky Dørålglupen and on to Grimsdalshytta Lodge (1,000 metres above sae level). Time: Six hours.

Day 5: Hike across Steinbuhøe to Hageseter (911 metres above sae level). Time: 4 hours. Then onwards to Hjerkinn, 1 hour. Departure by train from Hjerkinn. Arrival at Oslo Central Station at 8:42 pm.

Mountain, glacier, valley and fjord

This hike shows you some of Norway's most beautiful scenery. It is the variations which make Breheimen fascinating. Here you can experience winter on the peaks and glaciers, spring on the slopes and summer in the valleys. This week has plenty of adventures, like bike ride along the magnificent Lustrafjord, glacier guiding and hikes in spectacular terrain.

Route:
Day 1: Meeting point by the platform at Oslo Bus Terminal 20 minutes before departure. Look for the platform on the monitor. Departure with Nordfjordekpressen  at 9:30 am (arrival Oslo Airport Gardermoen 10:15 am) to Lom. From Lom you continue by local bus to Krossbu.

Day 2: Local bus from Krossbu to Bøvertun at 10:40 am. Steep hike up from Bøvertun (937 metres above sea level), crossing Tverrbyttfjellet Mountain (approximately 1,500 metres above sea level) and down to the cabin at Nørdstedalseter (937 metres above sea level). Time: Six hours.

Day 3: By bike from Nørdstedalseter down the beautiful Fortunsdalen Valley, to Skjolden, then we continue along the magnificent Lustrafjord. We cross the fjord by boat and return to Nørdstedalseter by bus. Time: Eight hours.

Day 4: Down the Nørdstedalen Valley, and up to the edge of the Fortundalsbreen Glacier (1,457 metres above sea level), then glacier guided walk over the glacier. Down to the lodge Sota Sæter (733 metres above sea level). Time: Seven hours.

Day 5: Optional day trip from Sota Sæter to for example Mysubyttdalen. Or resting day. Time: four to six hours.

Day 6: Up the Surtbyttdalen and Sprangdalen valleys (1,320 metres above sea level). With good weather conditions, you have a breathtaking view over the Jostedalsbreen Glacier and its surrounding peaks. Hike down to Sprongdalshytta. Time: Five hours.

Day 7: By foot down to Viva, one hour. By bus to Sogndal, change to Sogn- og Fjordane Ekspressen to Oslo Bus Terminal, arrival at 9:20 pm.
