What to do in Innherred

Historical places, local food, galleries and fishing are some of the activities that can be experienced during your stay in Innherred.

Visit a museum

At the Stiklestad National Cultural Centre you will find an outdoor museum with exhibitions and guided tours during the summer. The St. Olav Drama is a play depicting the battle at Stiklestad where St. Olav engaged the king's army in the year 1030. This is a key moment in Norwegian history and is considered to be the point at which Christianity first took a solid foothold in Norway. Explore all this at The Stiklestad National Cultural Centre.

Egge Museum is an open air museum, which includes a distinctive 19th century square farm-yard featuring buildings originating from farms in the area.

The museum also covers newer history of agriculture and an old street from the town of Steinkjer.

Newer history from World War II is presented at Falstadsenteret in Levanger.

Water activities

There are a number of companies offering canoe rental and both fresh- and saltwater fishing in local lakes and fjords. Try the Verdal River for salmon fishing.

The Hopla water system in Levanger and 50 lakes in Steinkjer are all easy to reach and are excellent areas for fishing.

Most of the fishing spots also offer some form of overnight accommodation. This is the case at Skarnsundet Fjord Centre for example. Here you also can rent kayaks. You can also rent a canoe at Føllingstua Camping and Brandheia Villmark & Velvære.

The only public swimming pool in the area, Dampsaga Bad, is located in Steinkjer along the E6.

Cycling

Biking is a great way of getting around Innherred. You can hire a bike at the tourist information office in Steinkjer.

Walking

Norway's geographical centre is situated near the gateway to the Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park

The Egge area in Steinkjer is a unique area, rich in historical sites and other cultural findings. It is also a great area for shorter walks, offering a good view over the Trondheimfjord and the town of Steinkjer.

There are nice walking trails in and around Levanger town centre.

Try a guided caving tour in Steinkjer from Mokk Farm.

Anyone wishing to ascend to loftier heights without going on a mountain hike will find that Innherred has a lot to offer visitors. Popular spots include Oftenåsen Hill in Steinkjer, Hårskallen in Levanger and Tittinghalla in Inderøy.

Play golf

Golf enthusiasts will find courses in both Verdal and Steinkjer. Steinkjer has a nine-hole course. At Stiklestad Golf Club in Verdal, you can play on an 18-hole course and relax in a new club house.

Go-karting

There is an outdoor go-kart track just 12 kilometres from Steinkjer centre. Follow fv. 763 in the direction of Ogndalen to reach it.

Bowling

You can go bowling in both Steinkjer and Levanger.

Art exhibitions

During the whole year there are many art exhibitions around the region - both of local and national art. Contact the tourist office for more information.
