Getting to Ålesund and Sunnmøre and around

Ålesund and Sunnmøre are easy to get to by air, land and sea. Ålesund is the regional traffic hub with connections to the whole Sunnmøre region.

By plane

A 20-minute drive from Ålesund town centre, you will find Ålesund Airport VigraDomestic air connections are good, with direct flights to Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim. 

International flights have increased in the last years, and currently there are direct routes to London, Alicante, Copenhagen and Riga with good connections to/from other international destinations.

SASNorwegian and airBaltic are the airlines operating regular traffic to/from Ålesund Airport Vigra. The airline Norwegian flies directly Gatwick - Ålesund twice a week.

The airport has good bus connections to and from Ålesund centre, the traffic hub Moa, and to the speedboat terminal at Valderøy.

There are also good connections from Ørsta-Volda Airport Hovden near Volda near Volda, to/from most Norwegian towns and cities.

By train

The railway station in the region is at Åndalsnes, a good 120 kilometres from Ålesund, with a bus connection to/from Ålesund five times per day. Travelling time between Oslo and Åndalsnes is 5 hours and 30 minutes. The bus between Åndalsnes and Ålesund takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. For timetables and booking, please contact the Norwegian State Railways (NSB) and Nettbuss.

By bus

Express bus services with Nor-Way Bussekspress run throughout the region, with good connections to/from OsloBergen and Trondheim.

TimEkspressen goes regularly between Volda, Ålesund, Molde and Kristiansund.

Travel time from Ålesund to Kristiansund  is three hours. Ålesund to Volda is two hours.

By boat

Hurtigruten (The Norwegian Coastal Express)
Many people describe Hurtigruten as "the world's most beautiful voyage". Hurtigruten calls daily at Ålesund and Torvik on both the northbound and southbound voyages. The northbound service also makes the Ålesund - Geiranger - Ålesund roundtrip daily from April to September.

Express boats and ferries
Express boats and ferries sail up and down the coast, in sheltered waters and across open seas, to towns and villages, and small and large islands. They provide perfect logistics for a holiday of island hopping, or an itinerary entirely of your own choosing. Be warned, there may be queues in the summer months. For the most popular ferries you are wise to start queueing early.

By car

Driving in the regions of Ålesund and Sunnmøre can be a rewarding scenic experience. And the journeys from Bergen and Trondheim include some beautiful ferry crossings.

  • Oslo - Ålesund 520 kilometres (8 hours), take the E6 to Dombås, then continue on the E136 via Ørskog and Skodje to Ålesund.
  • Trondheim - Ålesund 285 kilometres (5 hours), take the E39 heading south.
  • Bergen - Ålesund 370 kilometres (6 hours), there are several exciting routes to choose from, including the coastal road E39. An alternative is to take the E39 to Byrkjelo, then rv. 60 via Olden and Stryn to Ålesund.
