What to do in Bergen
As a European Capital of Culture and World Heritage City, Bergen offers world-class experiences and culture. The gateway to the fjords of Norway, the Bergen region boasts the ideal combination of nature, culture and interesting urban attractions – year round.
This charming town has much to offer: Troldhaugen, the home of composer Edvard Grieg, a great aquarium, a busy fish market and stunning views from Mt Fløyen, easily accessible by the funicular from the centre of town.
Check out the Hanseatic Wharf, Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage site, learn about Bergen history in one of several small local museums or just take a walk along and in between the old wooden houses.
The seven mountains surrounding Bergen offer great opportunities for walking/hiking within easy reach of the city centre.
Bergen is the natural start for many day trips exploring the surrounding fjords, or for extended trips to the Sognefjord area.
Bergen has always been a city of traders. You will find plenty of tempting shopping in the city centre – from small, specialised shops to large department stores.
During the long, bright summer nights, Bergen also has a great outdoor concert venue that attracts many national and international artists - Koengen, which is located in Bergen Fortress Park, is only a few minutes from Bryggen.
What to do around Bergen
The Sognefjord is one of the world’s longest fjords, with picturesque villages dotted along the 204 kilometre-long fjord. The Sognefjord lies beneath the Jostedalsbreen Glacier, the largest glacier on mainland Europe. The Jotunheimen National Park offers great activities in fantastic natural surroundings for all ages and all fitness levels.
The Nærøyfjord, another UNESCO World Heritage site in the fjord area, is the wildest and most beautiful branch of the Sognefjord, with sheer, snow-topped mountains, waterfalls and idyllic farms clinging to the mountainsides. It is 17 kilometres long and the narrowest point is only 250 metres wide.
The passage through Nærøyfjord is one of the most dramatic fjord trips in Europe. A ferry runs between Gudvangen and Flåm in summer, a truly scenic trip. Several guided tours are also available.
The Sognefjord is easy accessible from Bergen and makes a perfect stop to explore on your way between Bergen and Ålesund.
The Hardangerfjord is known for its many orchards. In May the fjord’s thousands of apple and cherry trees come into blossom, making for a unique sight. In the mountains towering over the Hardangerfjord you will find the Hardangervidda National Park, the impressive Vøringfossen Waterfall and one of the country’s largest glaciers.
