Bird watching at Ekkerøy

Experience spectacular bird life in Northern Norway. Ekkerøy Holiday House offers environmentally friendly accommodation close to nature in Finnmark.

Ekkerøy Holiday House is close to the Arctic zone, in the Varanger area in eastern Finnmark.

Bird watching

Trying to find birds can be a difficult task. Varanger has many exclusive species and excellent bird watching areas, but little information on when and where you can find the birds.

As a bird watching guest at Ekkerøy Holiday House, you can use the new self-guiding system. The system consists of a GPS navigator with pre-programmed points of interest. Each point has an information folder with a detailed description of which birds you can expect to find and which strategy to use to have the best chance of success.

Getting to Ekkerøy

You may travel by sea with the Norwegian Coast Express, Hurtigruten (Vadsø is a regular stop) or by air with a direct flight from Oslo to Kirkenes. Here you may hire a car and drive about two hours to Ekkerøy. Another alternative is to take a smaller plane across the fjord from Kirkenes to Vadsø. The trip takes about 10 minutes. To drive from Vadsø airport to Ekkerøy takes 10 minutes.

Accommodation

Ekkerøy Holiday House is a certified ecotourism company and a good base for bird watching.

Ekkerøy Holiday House rents out apartments and a house with an interesting history. The accommodation on offer is self-catering with a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedrooms and a birch log sauna. There is a beautiful view towards the Varangerfjord.

The house and the apartments are excellent night stops as they are close to the well-known bird mountain and bird life in general in the area. Ekkerøy has the richest diversity of birds in Norway as a whole.
