What to do in Nordland

Choose a whale safari in Vesterålen or a sea eagle safari in Lofoten when you are in Nordland.

Nordland gives you the opportunity to see animals and birds in their true element. Join a photo safari to find sea eagles, seals, sperm whales or killer whales. There might also be an elk or a reindeer around the next turn...

The bird rocks at Røst, Lovund, Nykvåg and Bleiksøya are home to hundreds of thousands of puffins and other seabirds.

Two things you must not miss are a whale safari in Vesterålen and a sea eagle safari in Lofoten.

Arctic Circle Dogsledge Tour

Do the Joanna Lumley Dogsledge Tour cross the Arctic Circle, over wide open mountains and under the Arctic Lights.

Guided by Sirius Expedition: Sirius Expedition is a locally based dogsledging company, in witch offer dog sledding trips from two hours to several days. Imaging taking the morning train up to Bolna station. Here, dog sledges with 8 - 12 dogs each, will be waiting. After a three hour trip into the wilderness, you arrive at the Arctic Circle Cabin.

About 200 meters from the cabin you cross the Arctic Circle with nothing but the small cabin, the dogs and snow covered mountains surrounding you. Inside the cabin we have a nice warm lunch, before heading back to the train station. Those who want more "extreme" adventures can stay out in a tent / lavvo overnight. After the trip you will receive the Arctic Circle certificate.

Just 25 km north of Mo i Rana the Arctic Circle crosses the area from the coast to the high mountains. This gives you the chance to cross the Arctic Circle by boat or kayak at the coast, or cross country skiing/ dog sledding in the mountains. All alternatives will give you spectacular scenery and the beautiful Arctic light.

Fishing

Ever since the 1400s Nordland has been famed throughout Europe for the abundance of its fish. With a quarter of Norway’s coastline - approximately 14,000 kilometres – it is obvious that conditions are good for sea fishing.

You can fish from shore with a rod or take a boat out among the skerries or out to the open sea. Nordland has many good salmon and sea trout rivers, that can offer exciting fishing.

Hiking

If you want to walk on the islands of the skerries, along one of the many trails in the mountains or forests or to take a cultural heritage walk, all of these are possible in Nordland.

The contrasts between the high, majestic mountains and the broad coastline are perhaps some of the most fascinating Nordland’s nature can offer. Have a look at our website for more information, visitnordland.no. Here you can read about hiking in the grass-clad coastal mountains of Lofoten, glacier walking on Svartisen close to the Arctic Circle to mention a few.

Cycling

Despite its sometimes harsh nature and varied topography, Nordland has cycling routes to suit both the very fit and the somewhat more easy-going.

From the saddle of a bike you will be closer to nature and your experience will be more genuine. Decide for yourself how fast and how far you want to go and you can stop whenever you like.

You will find cycles for hire at many of the local tourist offices. Try island hopping by bike in Helgeland.

Artscape Nordland

Artscape Nordland is an international art collection comprising 33 works in as many municipalities. The collection was made between 1992 and 1998 when artists from all over the world made their contributions.

The works are permanently sited out in the varied and beautiful landscape – an art gallery without walls and roof – and with a floor area of 40,000 square kilometres.

"Footprints in the North"

Pieces of cultural heritage from each municipality provide a broad picture of the county’s people, nature and activities through ten thousand years. These “footprints” are marked with information signs, and many projects have organised walking trails in which interesting heritage items are signposted. Information material about each of the “footprints” may be purchased from the tourist offices. There is also a simple folder which gives a summary of the various "footprints".

Golfing under the midnight sun

When you look towards the green at the fifth hole, it is hard to concentrate. It is one o’clock in the morning, and you are being blinded by the midnight sun. A South-African was so enchanted by this that he had to leave the course. The feeling was just too strong. Try Skjomen Golf Park 35 km south of Narvik– a challenging 18 hole golf course. Lofoten Golf Links – a spectacular destination for golfing enthusiasts. Nearby Bodø you will find two golf courses. Read more on visitnordland.no

Island hopping by sea kayak

With a coastline including more than 18.000 islands and a multitude of lakes, rivers and waterfalls, Nordland is paradise for kayakers and canoers. In this way, you can reach places that would otherwise be unapproachable. Sea paddling, river paddling and paddling on lakes are three different experiences, but each one of them poses physical challenges to suit your level of profiency. Read more on visitnordland.no
