Tromsø is amongst the best places to see the northern lights

Spend your winter holidays in Tromsø and combine your northern lights hunt with the comforts of a lively Arctic city.

Getting here is easy – Tromsø has several connections through Oslo Gardermoen every day.

Great location for the northern lights

Tromsø is situated in the middle of islands, fantastic fjords and dramatic mountain peaks.

Being located in the middle of the northern lights belt, Tromsø boasts some of the highest levels of northern lights activity on earth. This awesome phenomenon can be observed in the period September to April, depending on weather conditions and solar activity. If the sky is clear, you might be able to see the northern lights right above the city, but if you want to increase your chances, we recommend going out of the city on a tour with experienced guides.

Going to Tromsø soon? Check out the Aurora Forecast for the probability of seeing the lights the next couple of nights.

Northern lights guaranteed

Regardless of the weather we are also able to guarantee a northern lights experience. The Science Centre of Northern Norway presents a northern lights panorama film in the largest planetarium in Norway. This is a very educational and beautiful film northern lights enthusiasts should see at the beginning of their stay. One of Northern Norway's largest attractions, Polaria, also shows a beautiful northern lights film from the region.

Chasing the northern lights

Tromsø can offer a wide range of possibilities when it comes to seeing the northern lights, so by coming here, you may choose the tour best suited to your interests. Every tour has the city centre as the starting point.

You can decide if you want to spend time outside in a location where there is a great chance of seeing the northern lights. You may also go on a more active northern lights hunt – chasing the lights in the area around Tromsø.

The minimum number of people for tours in Tromsø is two people. Check out the extensive winter programme  for more details.

What have others liked?

In previous seasons, the most sold northern lights tour through the tourist information was the Full-on Northern Lights Chase every single evening, by Arctic Guide Service.

The Northern Lights Bus with the experienced guide Ivar, departing every night at 7 pm is another popular tour.

Dog sledding under the northern lights by Tromsø Villmarkssenter or the reindeer sledding under the northern lights at Tromsø Friluftsenter are great tours many choose to get out of the city lights and in to cosy surroundings.

If the northern lights are your main reasons to come to Tromsø, going with a dedicated guide on a northern lights hunt is recommended.

Make sure you check out all the products in the evening edition of the winter programme – there you can find all the northern lights tours for the Tromsø region. In the daytime edition there are several suggestions on how to spend the few hours of daylight.
