Norwegian Masters

Get to know Norway's most famous artists - Henrik Ibsen, Edvard Grieg and Edvard Munch - and visit the places where they lived!

Travel in the Footsteps of the Masters:

Norway’s master artists have for centuries made their mark on Norwegians cultural life and traditions. Their music, paintings and writings have influenced the way Norwegians see themselves and the beautiful things in life. Here is your chance of bringing a part of Norwegian culture and history into your life.

We are delighted to present the three Norwegian Masters, their life, their art and their own special places.

Edvard Munch (1863-1944)

Norway’s greatest artist. He played a vital role in the development of Expressionism in modern painting.

Munch lived and worked for 28 years at Ekely, Oslo until his death at the age of 80, on January 23, 1944. Only his winter atelier remains and today it is rented out to artists. It is not open for visitors, except during exhibitions and concerts. See Edvard Munch's Studios at Ekely.

You can see his painting in both Munch Museum and National Gallery.

Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906)

Norway’s most famous writer. He was largely responsible for the rise of the modern realistic drama. It is said that Ibsen is the most frequently performed classical dramatist in the world after Shakespeare.

SitatIBSEN is an art project hoping to put 70-80 quotes of Henrik Ibsen in the pavement on Ibsen's daily route from Arbins gate to Grand Café in Oslo.

Edvard Grieg (1843-1907)

Internationally recognized as one of the world’s best composers. Many Norwegians, and many foreigners consider his music, to be an integral part of Norway’s national identity.

Edvard Grieg's home Troldhaugen in Bergen, is now a living museum comprising an exhibition centre, concert hall, composers' cabin and Grieg's villa dating from 1885. Frequent public concerts are held, particularly in the summer season.
