The region is the home of the Norwegian summer. Late June to early August is when the weather is at its most stable and warmest with sunny, long and bright days.
It is not unusual with temperatures reaching 77°F and above. At the same time there is hardly any humidity in the air. Sea temperatures reach 64°F and higher, making swimming a popular pastime.
You will find the highest temperatures inland; especially Setesdal is famous for its many high temperature records. Along the coast, a cool sea breeze refreshes you.
September and October sees the arrival of wetter and wilder weather. During this period the land areas lose more heat than the sea, and eventually the coastal areas have the highest temperatures. At the same time, the landscape is painted in golden colours, inviting you to go walking in the fresh, crisp air.
In the past few years there have been some quite amazing snow-storms during winter even in coastal areas. You can expect much of the inland regions to be transformed into a winter wonderland from late November until early April. The coastal areas have much milder winters thanks to the Gulf Stream. However, gales, rain and cloud are likely to hit these areas.
Spring arrives early in Southern Norway compared to the rest of the country, usually it arrives in April. It is easy to know when spring is coming. The days get a little warmer and lighter day by day. Spring flowers appear, the trees are budding, birds start to build their nests and the farmers deliver the new-born lambs. You can feel life virtually exploding all around you.
However, the weather in spring can be very varied. There may be days when it is cold enough to snow, and days when it is warm enough to sit outside in the sunshine. Spring months can also be very windy.
Remember that the weather and temperatures can change quickly, especially in the mountains. So whether summer or winter, autumn or spring – bring good footwear and warm clothes.
