Norwegian society is, generally speaking, liberal towards the gay community. Norway has several gay public figures and celebrities in entertainment and sports, as well as in politics and business.
Gay couples can go to any restaurant or bar of their choice. However, there are certain venues where you are more likely to meet other gays and lesbians, mainly in the city centre.
Norway's gay nightlife is not segregated as in some other countries; gays and lesbians often go to the same places, and different age groups mix.

Same-sex marriage became legal in Norway on 1 January 2009 when a gender neutral marriage bill was enacted after being passed by the Norwegian legislature in June 2008.
Norway became the sixth country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. Norway has allowed same-sex civil unions since the 30 April 30 1993 Act, which came into force on 1 August 1993. The Registered Partnership Act grants virtually all the protections, responsibilities and benefits of marriage, including arrangements for the breakdown of the relationship.
