Location

Hardangerfjorden is situated in the county of Hordaland, in the heart of Western Norway. 

Facts

The Hardangerfjord is 179 kilometres long.  It is the second longest fjord in Norway and the third longest in the world. At its deepest, it is 800 metres.

What to do

Experience the fjord with a cruise. Popular activities nearby are summer skiing at Folgefonna and hiking on Hardangervidda, one of Europe’s largest mountain plateaus.

Accommodation

Getting to the Hardangerfjord

By round trips
A good way to see the fjords is to join one of several organised round trips. Fjord Tours and Fjord 1 have good selections of high quality round trips in Fjord Norway.

From Oslo
The Hardangerfjord lies approximately 330 kilometres northwest of Oslo.

  • By bus:
    Daily departures to Odda (approximately seven hours). Odda lies besides the Sørfjord, an arm of the Hardangerfjord.

  • By plane:
    Daily departures from Oslo to Bergen. Flight time approximately 50 minutes. For timetables and booking, please contact SAS or Norwegian. Take the airport bus to Bergen city centre and catch a new bus to Norheimsund (approximately two hours). An alternative is to take an express boat from Bergen to Rosendal. For timetables and booking, please contact Nor-Way Bussekspress (bus) and Rødne Fjord Cruise (boat).
  • By car:
    The drive from Oslo to the Hardangerfjord takes approximately six hours. Follow the E 18 from Oslo to Drammen. Then take E 134 to and follow this to Skare. From Skare follow Rv 13 to Odda, which lies besides the Sørfjord, an arm of the Hardangerfjord.
  • By train:
    There are no trains that take you all the way to the Hardangerfjord, but you can take the Bergen Railway from Oslo to either Geilo, Voss or Bergen and continue with bus or rental car to the Hardangerfjord. For timetables and booking, please contact the Norwegian State Railways (NSB).

From Bergen
The Hardangerfjord lies approximately 40 kilometres southeast of Bergen.

  • By car:
    The drive from Bergen to the Hardangerfjord takes approximately one hour. Follow the E 16 from Bergen to Trengereid, and the follow Rv 7 to Norheimsund.
  • By bus:
    Daily departures to Norheimsund (approximately one and a half hour). For timetables and booking, please contact Nor-Way Bussekspress.
  • By express boat:
    Daily departures from Bergen to Rosendal. For timetables and booking, please contact Rødne Fjord Cruise.

From Stavanger
The Hardangerfjord lies approximately 200 kilometres north of Stavanger.

  • By car:
    The drive from Stavanger to the Hardangerfjord takes approximately three and a half hours. Follow the E 39 to Arsvågen where you take a ferry to Mortavika. Continue on the E 39 to Tysvær. From Tysvær take the E 134 to Skare and follow Rv 13 to Odda. Odda lies besides the Sørfjord, an arm of the Hardangerfjord.
  • By bus:

  • By plane:
    Daily departures from Stavanger to Bergen. Flight time approximately 40 minutes. For timetables and booking, please contact SAS or Norwegian. From Trondheim
The Hardangerfjord lies approximately 630 kilometres southwest of Trondheim.

  • By car:
    From Trondheim follow the E 6 south to Strand, via Dombås. Follow Rv 15 via Vågåmo to Rv 51. Then drive Rv 51 to Skammestein and turn left and drive towards the E 16. When you have reached the E16, follow it to Voss and then take Rv 13 to Granvin. From Granvin take Rv 7 to Norheimsund.
  • By plane:
    Daily departures from Trondheim to Bergen. Flight time approximately one hour. For timetables and booking, please contact SAS or Norwegian. Take the airport bus to Bergen city centre and catch a new bus to Norheimsund (approximately two hours). An alternative is to take an express boat from Bergen to Rosendal.
