Nordland has more to offer than the midnight sun and the charms of summer.

In late autumn, when the herring return to the fjords, for example Tysfjord, for the winter, they are followed by between 500 and 700 hungry killer whales. Together with the rugged scenery of Nordland and the unique light conditions, this sets the scene for an unforgettable wildlife experience.

Swimming or kayaking

The Lonely Planet Blue List, which quickly has become a trendy travel guide, recommends seasoned travellers, who are on the lookout for new experiences, to try a killer whale safari in Nordland.

According to the 2007 edition, experiencing a pod of killer whales at close range, particularly by swimming or kayaking among the enormous animals, is one the most exciting experiences in the world.

In spite of their scary name, there are no reports of killer whales having attacked people, so the bravest whale watchers are actually allowed to swim among them when conditions are favourable.
