Staking a claim to be the world's most northerly jazz festival, Polarjazz was founded in 1998. Although its roots lie in jazz the festival's music policy has broadened to include pop, soul, hiphop and dance artists.
Polarjazz has been covered by international music media for some years, and has proven popular with performers for its distinctive location. Longyearbyen is the largest town on the island of Spitsbergen, part of the Svalbard archipelago, several hundred miles directly north of the mainland. The town has the feel of an artic research station, which is what it in fact is, but is well resourced with infrastructure. Visitors to Polarjazz can also experience other winter tourism activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling and experiencing the famous northern lights.
