The new standard is internationally acclaimed and gives a common standard for the development of sustainable management within destinations.
The criteria and indicators in the new standard are founded on UNWTO Principles, in line with EU Agenda for action, checked against GSTC, grounded by a technical working group and tested in 4 destinations over the past 3 years.
- Sustainable tourism is a smarter way of doing business. The new destination standard will improve the work done within the sustainable travel sector in Norway and at the same time give tourists a better and more sustainable holiday experience in Norway, says the Norwegian tourism director, Per-Arne Tuftin about the new standard.
Norway is a country of outstanding natural beauty – dramatic waterfalls, crystal clear fjords, majestic mountains, captivating wilderness and spectacular glaciers – nowhere else will holiday makers feel so close to nature.
- Norwegian tourism relies on this unspoilt and beautiful landscape to encourage people to visit. This is why we are constantly working to improve and increase the sustainability within this sector, says Tuftin.
Several regions and destinations work hard to improve their sustainability. Today Vega, Trysil, Røros and Lærdal will be the first destinations in Norway who receive the official recognition as sustainable travel destinations. These four destinations will lead the way in the further work done to make Norway a more sustainable holiday destination.
- We are constantly improving the Norwegian experience for all our visitors, ensuring they have an enjoyable and unforgettable experience. A treat for all the senses – you can hear, touch, see, feel and smell Norway through its authentic culture, traditions, history and cuisine, says Tuftin.
